I got a freaky ole lady
name a cocaine Katy
who embroideries on my jeans
I got my poor ol’ grey haired daddy
drivin’ my limousine
Now it’s all designed to blow our minds
but our minds won’t really be blown
Like the blow that’ll getcha
when you get your picture
on the cover of the Rollin’ Stone
Chorus
We got a lot of little teenage
blue eyed groupies
who do anything we say
We got a genuine Indian Guru
who’s teaching us a better way
We got all the friends that money can buy
so we never have to be alone
And we keep getting richer
but we can’t get our picture
on the cover of the Rollin’ Stone

Hi. George here. Welcome to this video where I give you a quick and dirty lesson of Dr. Hook’s Cover of the Rolling Stone on guitar.
We’ll go through the guitar chords, strumming pattern and then jam through it.
So the chords are nice and easy. We have 4 chords. It starts off in A. We also play A7, and E, and D.
For the strumming, let me give you a quick example. So what we’re doing there is playing the root and the fifth. For A, play the root or A which is 5th string open and then play the chord. And then we play the 5th which is E, the 6th string open. That kind of idea.
Now for the E, we do the same thing. The root here is E, 6th string open, then we play the 5th which is B and is played on the 5th string 2nd fret with the second finger.
Ok, for D, we’re only going to do this for one measure in the song. It’s D, 4th string open and then A which is 5th string open.
Now to count that, it’s 1 and a 2 and a 3 and a 4. So we’re giving a little upstroke there as well.
Ok, so that’s the guitar chords and the strumming pattern so let’s just jam this through.
Alright, Dr. Hook’s Cover of the Rolling Stone – that’s how I play it on guitar. I hope you can use that to put that song together and I hope you enjoyed the video. Alright. Have a good day. Peace. See you next time.
Liked your leson.
Nice job man thanks! cant get enough of this song right now
George – this is a really great lesson! Showing the strumming pattern was
great. Thanks so much!
Instead of the bass to chord, you can also play it in a blues shuffle, and
a little faster than this. I’m sure he slowed it down for the lesson
Nice lesson….singing both low and high parts is difficult though….
merci bien , belle chanson et belle leçon !
Hmm, why no harmonica?
I hated this lesson the first time that I saw it, but it’s tough to play anything in the beginning. Thanks man!
God bless you
Wow. That was the best lesson ever. From the nice, slow explanation and strumming pattern to the chords posted in the corner. That was the quickest I have ever learned a song. Thank you very much!

Hi. The song is in the key of A. So the scales to play over the various chords are going to be based on the key of A – 3 sharps, F#, C#, and G#.
When playing A, the scale would be A major = A, B, C#, D, E, F#, G#.
For the D chord, the scale would be D lydian = D, E, F#, G#, A, B, C#.
And for E or E7, use E mixolydian = E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D.
All scales are build from the A major. Concentrate on the chord tones.
Hope that helps. Cheers
Hello George, great lesson thank you very much! Btw what scale could you use to improvise with this song?
